Home away from home

Red, white and blue from green, white and saffron
Gandhi’s chakra to fifty stars.. Accent, British English to American,
Population dense to scarce
Indian, Asian to every race
From color familiar being shades of coffee, light to dark
to white, yellow, brown and black
Rupees to dollars, proud Indians to NRIs, the transition,
from resident permanent to citizen American,
Born and brought up there, to just visiting my motherland now on occasion
Arrived in a land foreign as a daughter and sister,
Became then a wife, a mother
Student I was, then a full fledged doctor
Being chauffeured snoozing away, to a full time driver
Being spoon fed, to a cook, a housekeeper
Working full time, wouldn’t survive if not a multitasker
The voyage had had though it’s tides,
high and low
Arrived here decade and a couple few more years ago
As much as I relate to my color, my race there
Belong just as much I here
For nothing but differences amongst us are all that’s common
uniting us, knowing we’re here to do our best without question
To a country great, we pledge allegiance
Though roots are far behind, fruits sweet to bring here we promise
Watered there and sunlight is here, my story this is
similar to this country’s ancestors or yours
I love my nation, my America
as much I love my motherland, my India
Oceans apart, in the far East or West
As either one’s my home, away from home .. so truly I’m blessed!
