A dying mother’s “McDonald’s” miracle

I finally had a multidisciplinary meeting to offer comfort measures, with the struggling family unfortunately in denial, who wanted everything done for my 80 something year old cute, petite, li’l, bed bound patient, with worsening kidney failure, failure to thrive, dementia, with contractures, bedsores, including dialysis, while she wasn’t even aware of her surroundings, refusing to eat, or drink, cachectic, curled up in bed.. It’d be best to keep her comfortable, all the doctors had advised to her 5 grown kids, to be with loved ones, rather than being in the hospital, to let nature take its course and limit suffering and pain. They disagreed, until a miraculous moment, when she peeked out of the sheets, asked for “McDonalds”, ate it all up when brought to her and though none of us expected this, and I haven’t witnessed anything like this before, this was such a powerful call of nature, of her innocent actions with a message filled with wisdom, speaking without words, so loud and clear, to her kids in the room, to still at this point let her decide the best for herself, to be comfortable, pain free and happy, to just let their Mom be…
