To live while still alive

In the shadowed depths of life cruel

With grace, fought my patient his battle

In the realm of sorrow, where tears reside

His young wife in denial to her own self lied

A poignant tale of loss, relentless

The tendrils of his illness

Unfolded a nightmare into reality unkind

In days, over is a life, family shattered

Oh, how we yearn for solace’s embrace

To ease the anguish, to find a trace

Of grace, begged he for time just a little more

Hopes he had, not with lines and drains,

Or those ambulance rides and sirens

The only physical relief was with sedation

Mentally he preferred rather the pain

As he begged to live

While he was still alive

Not as my patient now late

But as a husband, a father, bereft

In the realm of sorrow, where tears reside,

His young wife in denial to her own self lied

In the shadowed depths of life cruel

With grace, fought my patient his battle
